Candidate's Statement

Ernest Mullins is originally from Youngstown, Ohio.  He was born on Christmas day, 1959.  He attended Youngstown State University and graduated from that institution with a bachelor’s degree in philosophy and religious studies. Like almost every lawyer in the world, he took a lot of political science classes.  So I’m sitting at this keyboard wondering why it is that I am writing about myself in the third person.  I don’t think I’m going to do that.  Anyway, after I graduated in 1982, I went to the University of Akron to pursue a law degree since nobody wants to hire a kid with a bachelor’s degree in the liberal arts.  It’s not like it’s engineering or anything. I graduated from law school in 1985 and I have been pacticing law ever since.  My first job was as a public defender in Huron County, Ohio.  For you geography buffs, that is north central Ohio. One good thing I found about Norwalk, which is the county seat of Huron County, is that it is next door to Cedar Point which is probably the best roller coaster park in the world.  Milan, also in Huron County, is the birthplace of Thomas Edison.

I moved to Osceola County in 1987 and I have been living here ever since.  I have two children and, until 2008, I was married. My son, Christopher, graduated from Florida State University in 2015 after attending Bishop Moore High School where he stood out as a defensive player on the varsity lacrosse team.  Go hornets! My daughter, Leah, won a soccer scholarship to Lenoir Rhyne University in Hickory, North Carolina.  She is in Utah now jumping out of perfectly good airplanes and climbing mountains.

I started out in Osceola County as an assistant public defender where I got a lot of my experience in criminal trial practice. In 1989, I ventured out on my own and began representing two mobile home parks as well as criminal defendants on both a private and court appointed basis. I have been an established member of the private criminal defense bar here in Osceola County since 1989 and I have lived in this county and employed people from this county since that time. Beginning in 1989, I was a child support enforcement hearing officer until it became a full time position in 2001 at which  time I resigned in order to devote myself almost exclusively to the defense of criminal cases. In 2004, I was honored to accept an appointment from Governor Bush to the Judicial Nominating Commission of the Ninth Judicial Circuit. Gubernatorial appointment is the other way that Judges are selected in this state and I served in that capacity until the end of my four year term in 2008.

Currently, I am a member of the Rosie O’Grady’s Highlanders which is a bagpipe and drum band in Orlando.  We are a teaching band and we offer instruction in these instruments in our efforts to keep the Celtic traditions alive in our young players.  We also participate in the Scottish Highland Games in Orlando every January as well as elsewhere thoughout the state and in other states at various times of the year.

I would be honored to serve as your next County Judge in Group 1 as I have the experience, the temperament, and the knowledge of the law in order to do the job with skill, efficiency, and dignity.

Thank you for reading this and for considering me when you vote in August.
