Candidate's Statement

My name is Amanda Mills NesSmith and I am seeking office for Dixie County School Board Member District 2. As a lifelong resident of this community for 41 years, I would deeply appreciate an opportunity to give back in some small way to the community that has given so much to me. I believe that a strong public school district is essential to the future of not only students, but the entire community. Dixie County has a proud history of educational excellence. I should know, I am a 1998 graduate of Dixie County High School; where I received a quality education that prepared me well for college. I now hold a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice, thanks in large part to the fine caliber of teachers and staff at DCHS. I would like very much to see that same opportunity is given to each and every student in our community.

The most important function of a school board member is to advocate for the best interest of the students. As our District motto states, “Children First” I want my community to know that I can be trusted with this precious responsibility. Not only am I a lifelong resident of this area and a graduate of DCHS, but I am also the parent of a first grade and a fifth grade student as well as an active volunteer in the elementary school my youngest child attends.

I am a Conservative Christian. I attend Cross City Church of God. I have been married to Aaron Corbin NesSmith for almost 13 years. Together we have 2 children, Harley (11 years old) and Aldwyn (7 years old), who both attend Dixie Districts Schools. I am the daughter of Marie Sikes Fowler and WC & Tracy Mills.

I have served for nearly twenty-four (24) years in the Florida Army National Guard. I am an Iraq War Veteran. I have been full time with the National Guard as a Recruiting and Retention Non-Commissioned Officer Career Counselor for the last 14 years.

As stated before, I am a 1998 graduate of Dixie County High School; a 2007 Summa Cum Laude Graduate of Lake City Community College with an Associate in Arts Degree in Liberal Arts and Sciences; a 2011 graduate of Saint Leo University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice.

I have completed many advanced military trainings, such as: Basic Combat Training, Advanced Individual Training with an occupational specialty in 92Y Supply Specialist, 12N Horizontal Construction Engineer, 12V Concrete and Asphalt Equipment Operator, and 79T Recruiting & Retention NCO. Warrior Leader Course where I was in the top of my class and placed on the Commandants List. Senior Leader Course. Master Leader Course where I was the top of my class and was placed on the Commandants List and Honor Graduate.

I am a very active supporter/sponsor to the youth and youth programs in our community.

Some of the organizations that I am involved in include:

OTES PTO/SAC President; Dixie Education Foundation where I am a Director and I also serve on the Finance Committee, Publicity/Public Events Committee, and School Classroom Visits Committee; Dixie County Tobacco Free Partnership Co-Chair; Dixie Babe Ruth Girls Softball 12U Coach

This community deserves a school board that will invite you to the table, meet you with transparency and honesty, and represent your interests. Our children deserve a standard of education that will allow them to succeed. Our taxpayers deserve to have their money allocated fairly and responsibly without undue burden. I am asking you, my friends, and neighbors, for a chance to do my part.

Please at any time reach out to me if you have any questions, comments, or concerns.
