Graduated High School in 1970 and then searched for direction until he enlisted in the Navy during the Bicentennial celebration year of 1976. Naval service gave an opportunity for higher education as Steve obtained a Bachelor of Science Degree in 1983 from Excelsior College in Albany, NY using the Navy Campus for Achievement. Steve’s enlisted service was on USS Henry L Stimson SSBN 655 Gold and gave him his first exposure to Jacksonville in 1979 since while homeported in Charleston, SC the Submarine made patrols out of Kings Bay, Georgia just north of Jacksonville. His degree allowed him to apply for Officer Candidate School and he was subsequently accepted and commissioned in 1984. Once again returning to Kings Bay to do patrols on USS Von Steuben SSBN 632 Gold as Assistant Weapons Officer he decided to work towards getting transferred to Jacksonville a city he was growing an affection for. That became a reality when as Officer of the Deck he drove a Trident Submarine the USS Tennessee into Kings Bay in March, 1989, the first time a ship of that class entered that port as it is now the East Coast homeport for all Trident Class Submarines. An integral part of the D-5 missile test program as Strategic Missile Officer Steve then cross decked over to the USS Pennsylvania SSBN 735 Blue to serve as it’s Strategic Weapon’s Officer for 4 patrols. That lead to his retirement in 1996 as he also was awarded a Master’s in Business Administration from Brenau University of Gainesville, GA which had a contract to teach on the Submarine Base. Starting with one franchised Tax Service in 1995 in St Mary’s, GA Steve grew the business until it served over 30,000 customers in over 50 offices with over 300 team members at its height. Subsequently in 2009 the Franchises were sold back to corporate and Steve spent one Tax Season in Seattle, Washington working for another Tax Service as Area Developer. Now Steve asks for your support for City Council at Large Group One Steve wants to serve you and will fight for a Bolder, Leaner Jacksonville! Served in Business Leadership positions: Past President of the Northside Business Leaders, North Council of Chamber, Area Council Director Chamber’s Executive Committee, Board of EDEN (Economic Development Enhancement of North Jacksonville) and Franchisee of the Year for his Franchisor. Served Community: Appointed by the Mayor to the Citizen’s Planning Advisory Committee, Metropolitan Planning Organization Citizen’s Planning Committee, and Northwest Economic Citizen’s Advisory Committee. Served his Country: Veteran, “Mustang” Officer in the Navy now retired. Served onboard 4 Fleet Ballistic Missile Submarines. Married to Nancy Burnett an active mentor of children and a business/community leader, on May 12, 1979. Nancy was Big Sister of the Year in 2005 and currently on the Ms Senior Jacksonville Court as 3rd runner up. No children but two cats.
