Candidate's Statement

Republican City Council candidate Jill Dame has lived in Jacksonville since 1958. A graduate of Episcopal High School, she earned a B.A. with honors from Queens College in Charlotte, NC, and a J.D., also with honors, from the University of Florida College of Law. After graduating from UF, Ms. Dame returned to Jacksonville to practice law with Mahoney Hadlow & Adams, specializing in real estate and commercial lending law and becoming a partner. In 1987, she earned a Master of Arts in Teaching at Jacksonville University while teaching in an independent school. Most recently, Ms. Dame has served as a consultant and interim executive for nonprofit organizations, focusing on organizational development, fundraising, and strategic planning. From 2006 – 08, she was the interim administrator for St. Mark’s Episcopal Church. Ms. Dame chaired the implementation task force for JCCI’s 1998 study on The Role of Nonprofit Organizations, which resulted in the founding of the Nonprofit Center of Northeast Florida. After establishing the center, she secured grants to fund it for three years and led the search for its first executive director. Later, she served as interim CEO of the center. Ms. Dame currently sits on the boards of Episcopal High School and Girls on the Run of Northeast Florida. She is past officer of the Young Lawyers Division of the Jacksonville Bar Association and has served as president of Willing Hands, the Junior League of Jacksonville and PACE Center for Girls in Jacksonville. A member of the 1987 class of Leadership Jacksonville, she has also served on that organization’s board and as chair of Youth Leadership Jacksonville. In addition, Ms. Dame has served as secretary of the board of the Cathedral Foundation, treasurer of the vestry of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, and chair of the Mayor’s Commission on the Status of Women. She has served on the boards of St. Mark’s Episcopal Day School, the Family Visitation Center (now known as the Family Nurturing Center), the Queens College Alumni Association, and PACE Center for Girls, Inc., at the state level. She is a member of the Florida Bar and the Jacksonville Women’s Network, and a graduate of the inaugural class of The Jacksonville Regional Political Leadership Institute. In recognition of her commitment to community service, Ms. Dame has received the Junior League of Jacksonville’s Tillie Fowler Community Leadership Award; Leadership Jacksonville’s Distinguished Leadership Award and JCCI’s 2005 Milestones Award; she was named Folio Weekly’s Person of the Year in 2001. Ms. Dame also received the 2001 PACE, Inc. Local Board Volunteer of the year award and the 1999 Junior League of Jacksonville\'s President\'s Award. She and her husband, Peter, are the parents of 17 year-old twin daughters, Brooks and Darby.
