Candidate: John Ahern

I have lived in Moore Haven, Glades County, all of my life. My family has been in business in Moore Haven for 82 years. After my father died, I took over the business, and I have owned and operated a local business for 39 years. Presently, my wife Laura, my daughter Stacy, and my step son Jason, own Ahern’s Service Center and Convenience Store.  Laura and I have four granddaughters who keep us busy going to performances and sporting events. Family is important to me as is my community and county.

For 28 years I served on the Moore Haven City Council and have served 4 years on the Glades County Board of County Commissioners.  For over 20 years, I have worked with the Glades Economic Development Board (GCEDB) to boost the economy in Glades County.  Being on the Economic Development Board and serving as a county commissioner, I helped to get the travel center in Moore Haven which has provided fuel tax revenue for the county and the city. Also, as a commissioner and GCEDB member, I am working with the Glades County School Board to provide vocational classes at the training center and with New Glades County, LLC, on a property purchase from the county, which was the site of the Riverboat Inn, to build a hotel and restaurant in Moore Haven.

I have been on the Glades County Youth Livestock Board (GCYL) for over 40 years and a member of the Glades County Fish and Game Club for 48 years. I am a board member and chairman for the Glades Correctional Development Corporation (GCDC).  I also served on the volunteer fire department for 19 years. 

I recently completed the advanced leadership program “The Florida Forum for County Leaders” and was conferred the designation of Advanced County Commissioner by the Florida Counties Foundation in conjunction with the University of Florida IFAS Extension.  I am a proven leader with roots in Glades County and experience in private and governmental sectors.  I will work tirelessly for the betterment of Glades County.
