Candidate's Statement

Since moving back ten years ago to the hometown that he loves, Alan McMillan has had the great fortune to work on many important community issues, from being the President of his local homeowners association to serving as the Vice Chairman of Escambia County Restore Committee, as well as serving as a member of the Escambia County Mass Transit Advisory Committee. These experiences showcased local community issues as well as the widespread issues of District 2 and Escambia County. He is motivated and committed to do even more to effect change, and move needed improvements forward quickly. A native of Pensacola, McMillan has more than 45 years of high-level Federal Government and private sector public safety, health and environmental experience. Alan McMillan graduated from Pensacola Catholic High School and Pensacola Junior College. He was awarded a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Florida and a Master of Arts degree from the University of West Georgia. He also completed a Senior Executive Fellowship at Harvard University, Kennedy School of Government. McMillan has held numerous civic and community service leadership positions, including: ∞ Vice Chair of the Restore Act Advisory Committee to the Escambia County Board of Commissioners ∞ Board of Directors of WSRE public television ∞ Escambia County Administrator Candidate Review Committee ∞ Escambia County Mass Transit Advisory Committee ∞ Commodore of the Pensacola Yacht Club ∞ President of the Star Lake Homeowners Association ∞ Board of Directors of The Pensacola Camellia Club ∞ Member of the Environmental Committee of the Greater Pensacola Chamber ∞ Board of Trustees of the Satori Foundation McMillan was President and Chief Executive Officer of the National Safety Council from 2001 until his retirement in 2008. The National Safety Council is the nation’s largest not-for-profit safety and health advocacy organization. Prior to becoming President, he served for six years as the Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer. His accomplished record of government service and honors include: ∞ Deputy Assistant Secretary and Acting Assistant Secretary of Labor for OSHA ∞ President George H.W. Bush awarded McMillan the Presidential Award for Distinguished Executive Service, the Federal Government’s highest award for Senior Executives ∞ Regional Administrator for the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) in both the Chicago and Atlanta Regions ∞ Acting Assistant Secretary of Labor for Mine Safety and Health ∞ Deputy Assistant Secretary and Acting Assistant Secretary of Labor for the Employment Standards Administration ∞ Chairman of the Federal United Way Campaign of Chicago ∞ Deputy Associate Director of the Environmental, Safety, Health and Quality programs for the Los Alamos National Laboratory ∞ Board of Directors of the US/Mexico and Chicagoland Chamber of Commerce It would be his pleasure to continue his record of service here at home, by serving the people of Escambia County District 2 as their County Commissioner.
