Candidate's Statement

Larry has an impeccable military, business and personal background and will bring leadership, business skills, trust and ethics to the Destin City Council. For example, Larry will not accept campaign contributions from businesses or individuals. This eliminates any potential for future conflicts of interest. Larry will not use campaign signs, thus removing these unsightly signs from our beautiful city. Larry worked his way through college working in a grocery store in Charlotte, North Carolina. Immediately after graduating from college Larry joined the Air Force in 1967, retiring as a Lt. Col. in 1987. He could have gotten a draft deferment as an engineer but chose to serve his country instead. He was a fighter pilot and flew the F-4 and F-15 aircraft. He flew 184 combat missions in Vietnam and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross four times. He also served at the Pentagon where he managed the Air Force Range Improvement Program which conducted its engineering and contracting work at Eglin AFB. During his career he served as an Engineering Division Chief and the Division Chief responsible for the Test and Evaluation of weapons and tactics for the F-4, F-15, F-16, F-111 and A-10 aircraft. After retirement from the Air Force, Larry co-founded Suncoast Scientific Incorporated, a computer software design company. Larry served as President of the company until it was acquired by Motorola in 2000. He completed his working career as a Vice President at Motorola until his retirement in 2003. Larry served on the Destin City Council from 2010 to 2012 and sponsored the first ever City of Destin Economic Symposium where business, government and civilian leaders met to review and identify programs that would improve the economy and create jobs. Larry is an economic and political conservative and will apply those principles in making decisions. Larry is a member of the Destin Area Chamber of Commerce, American Legion Post 296, Main Street Betterment Alliance (citizens working together to improve Main Street), Emerald Coast Garden Association (citizens working to establish community gardens in Destin) and the Crispy Warriors (a group of men who socialize and pay tribute to our military veterans). Larry is also a member of: Order of Daedalians-A National Fraternity of Military Pilots, Northwest Florida Military Officers Association, and the Red River Valley Fighter Pilots Association-pilots who flew over Hanoi during the Vietnam War. Larry is also President of his homeowner association. Larry earned his Bachelor of Science Degree in Chemical Engineering from North Carolina State University in 1967 and his Master of Science Degree in Human Resource Management from the University of Utah in 1977. In 1985 he graduated from the USAF Air War College resident program. Larry is married to Kay Hines. Kay retired from civil service at Eglin AFB in 2000 with 33 years of service. They have two children, daughter Wendy, with husband, Mark and son, David, with wife Melanie, and two granddaughters, Maddie and Emmie. Now that the children have grown up and have their own careers, Larry and Kay have a passion to serve the community. They love fishing, boating, golfing, enjoying the beach and their Golden Retriever, Molly (a rescue dog and the boss of the house). You may contact Larry at 850-865-4108 or via email at hineslk@aol.com.
