Candidate's Statement

I was born and raised in Jacksonville, Florida to Anthony and Earline Nixon. I am a product of the northside community. I grew up attending James Weldon Johnson Branch YMCA, located in the District 10 community, since the age of 7. It was there that I learned the importance of volunteerism and became a Jr. Counselor & Jr. Lifeguard. At the age of 15, I began working every summer at Charles \"Boobie\" Clark Pool (Sherwood Pool) as a lifeguard and I now manage the pool. As a graduate of Stanton College Preparatory School, I was involved in numerous activities. I was on the Girl\'s Basketball Team, Track Team, Jr. Civitan, participated in school plays, served as Senior Class Historian, and I was also the school mascot! I then went on to the University of Florida where I majored in Political Science. While working toward my degree, I served on numerous executive boards and committees in which I planned and raised funds for several prominent university events. None I am more proud of than serving as the university’s first State of the Black Student Union Director in which I was responsible for developing a conference that addressed social, economic, and political issues that affected many black students in highs school and colleges. As well as serving as the Black History Month Celebration\'s Solicitation Director in which I solicited over $30,000 in funds. While at UF I also became a member Gamma Sigma Sigma National Service Sorority, Inc. My last semester in school, I returned back to Jacksonville and interned in my very own community, City Council District 10. It was while interning there that I gained valuable hands-on experience to help lead the community to a better way of life. Also, because of my hard work and diligence, I was chosen to become the District 10 Representative to the Northwest Citizen\'s Planning Advisory Committee. I am currently employed with the MaliVai Washington Kids Foundation as the Teen/Mentor Coordinator. It is there that I recruit mentors for the after-school program, and develop and implement life skills/educational curriculum for the teenagers. I have also been a lifelong member of Philippian Community Church. I have a 1yr old daughter named Natalie.
