Candidate: Shayla E. Lee

Shayla E. Lee is a native of Jacksonville, Florida. She graduated from Stanton College Preparatory and then earned a Mass Media Arts degree with a concentration in Public Relations from Clark Atlanta University. She later earned her J.D. from Florida Coastal School of Law. During law school, she served as Vice President of the Human Rights Society, participated in the Wrongful Convictions Clinic, and worked as a teacher’s assistant. She also interned with Children’s Legal Services in Jacksonville. 

Mrs. Lee has a strong passion for helping children access resources that will help them succeed in life. She began her career in child dependency law, working for the Guardian ad Litem’s legal team and later Children’s Legal Services. Her work focused on helping children and families achieve stability through the dependency process.

Mrs. Lee then joined the Office of the Public Defender in the Fourth Judicial Circuit, where she defended juveniles in delinquency court. She was the lead attorney for juvenile specialty courts such as Girls Court and Crossover Court. She has also defended hundreds of adult clients charged with drug offenses, traffic violations, violent crimes, and other misdemeanor offenses. She later worked in private practice but her dedication to public service brought her back to the Public Defender’s office to defend felony cases in circuit court.

Mrs. Lee is a member of the Florida Bar, Jacksonville Bar, and the Florida Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers. She lives in Jacksonville with her husband and two daughters.
