Candidate's Statement

312 Bryn Mawr Island Bradenton FL 34207 (941) 751-1480 Terri.K.Wonder@gmail.com www.terriwonderforcommissioner.com Terri Wonder is a first-generation college student who hails from rural working-class roots in North Florida. Her mother is a retired nursing home administrator; her father, a World War II veteran, farmer, and television repairman; and step-father, a jeweler. Terri is educated all the way to the doctoral level, with a PhD in Interdisciplinary Education. A strong champion of civil rights and educational opportunity and access, Terri has co-authored academic articles about the positive legacy of Brown v. Board of Education. She has other publications to her name on the subjects of youth violence and semi-precious metals theft. Terri grew up in Sarasota County and has lived in Manatee County almost all of her adult life, with one recent major exception involving her two tours as a deployed US Army Civilian in Iraq. In 2008, the military hired Terri to be a non-combatant civilian social scientist in Iraq for the purpose of learning about the needs of local populations requiring social reconciliation and reconstruction. On her second deployment in 2009, she advised the US Commanding General of Iraq on the future of Al-Qaeda-based terrorism, predicting the current situation in Iraq. Terri\'s work was dangerous, involving travel \"outside the wire\" in places dominated by corrupt local leaders averse to outsiders seeking ground-truth about the needs of people who were being exploited and abused. In 2010, the US Army presented Terri with a Superior Civilian Service Award. She is credited for high-visibility field research for which she risked her life in order to save other peoples\' lives. Terri currently is a consultant for a start-up non-government organization dedicated to combating human trafficking. It is Terri\'s professional expertise in understanding the impact of top-level decision-making on the quality of life of local populations and vulnerable persons that allows Terri to ask unique, challenging questions about county government and affairs. Terri has conducted political instability, deforestation, and public perceptions research for US Central Command and US Southern Command. Her knowledge of Latin American economy, society, and culture will be a welcome asset to the Port of Manatee, which seeks greater trade relations with other countries in our hemisphere and beyond. Terri is married to a retired community college professor and volunteer Guardian Ad Litem Child Advocate, Ray Wonder. They live in one of Manatee County\'s oldest subdivisions, Bayshore Gardens.
